Cruising BylawAfter reviewing submissions on the proposed Cruising Bylaw 2010, the hearings panel asked for the further consultation to add a number of streets to those that went out for the initial consultation. The new streets include Helmores Lane, Rossall Street, parts of Manchester Street and the single lane section of Deans Avenue. Under the original proposal, cruising was to be prohibited on all multi-lane roads, the whole of Main Road (from Ferry Road to Marriner Street, Sumner) and all of Esplanade, Sumner, under the control of the Council on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, and on the night before a statutory holiday, from 10pm to 5am. New Christchurch Civic BuildingWork is continuing at a blistering pace on the new Christchurch Civic Building. Structural work on the Worcester Boulevard ramp should be finished by the end of May and the main Hereford Street entrance canopy is also starting to look quiet impressive. Internally, the under floor heating and bluestone tiles have been installed on the ground level; installation is almost complete on the acoustic lining in the Council Chambers; work has started on installing some of the carpet on the lower levels and the internal fit out has begun for the mezzanine floors and utilities spaces. We are still on track to open to the public on 23 August with the first Council meeting to be held in the building on 26 August and the official opening on 28 August. Christchurch Tram ExtensionThanks to five days of hard work by City Mall contractors, Downer EDI Works, over Easter. Around 40 meters of curved tram track was laid across the intersection of Colombo Street and Hereford Street in the Central City The work was completed ahead of time and will eventually link up with the existing tram line at the back of the ChristChurch Cathedral. Consultation has just closed on the proposed street modifications and parking changes required in the Poplar Street/Lichfield Street/High Street area to allow the tram to travel safely through the precinct. Submissions will be presented to the Council in June. The project team will shortly award the construction contract for the wider tram extension, and work will begin on Stage 1 of the extension soon after. Major Sewer Upgrade – Western Interceptor and Fendalton DuplicationStakeholder talks are still continuing with businesses and affected parties along the Western Interceptor and Fendalton Duplication pipeline routes. The Council wants to ensure the least disruption possible when work on upgrading the sewer lines starts in July. Cycleway developments in the cityThe Council has a number of projects underway to improve the ease and safety of biking in the city. The following cycleways and extensions are expected to be completed by mid 2010.
A cycleway extension from Northcote Road to Tuckers Road has been completed along the rail tracks and joins the existing cycleway south of Northcote Road. Traffic signals have been installed where the path crosses Northcote Road, making it safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
Work is about to start for cycle lanes on both sides of Kilmore Street, between Fitzgerald Avenue and Madras Street, to remove a ‘pinch point’ near the shops.
Work is about to start for cycle lanes on both sides of Stanmore Road to link with the existing ones on Avonside Drive.
Much needed improvements to the Linwood Avenue and Aldwins Road intersection are about to start. This will include cycle lanes on both sides of the road connecting up to existing lanes at each end and marked cycle waiting areas at the intersection.
Cycle lanes will be installed on both sides of Wairakei Road, stretching from the railway to almost reach Greers Road.
